West Lothian Leisure secure summer funding!

05 Jul 2021

West Lothian Leisure (WLL) have secured funding £48k from West Lothian Council to provide inclusive access to its Summer of Activity Programme as part of the council’s Get into Summer Project.

The funding supports activity opportunities during the summer break to children and their families who need it most and might otherwise miss out.

Nearly a thousand local children will benefit from free access to coached sports courses at the trust’s 9 Xcite venues and cultural activities at its arts venue, Howden Park Centre. Kids aged 5yrs+ will be able to enjoy a mix of sports from Multi-Sports, Golf, Football, Gymnastics, Hockey and Mountain Biking. The Learn 2 Swim Programme is also included teaching over 300 local children to swim.

The trust has also issued 2000 free family swim vouchers to make it possible for these families to visit any of their Xcite pools for a swim together.

“This funding will help all children, whatever their background, to enjoy their summer break, provide some respite” Tim Dent, Chief Executive.

Howden Connects
Supported by the Creative Scotland, Performing Arts Venue Relief Fund, Howden Park Centre launched the successful Howden Connects community arts, engagement programme.

Collaborating with local freelancers, artists and musicians, the Centre staged live performances whilst the centre remained closed due to covid restrictions.

As well as streamed music events West Lothian Schools benefited from the project with nearly a thousand pupils from 14 schools enjoying a live streamed performance on the life and work of Robert Burns.

Howden Connect is currently working with local artists, on an installation that engages with young people interested in Skateboard and Graffiti art, a topic closely linked to centre’s hometown Livingston. The completed installation will be displayed within the centre’s Gallery and online from September 2021.

New data from the ukactive Research Institute shows that for every 100,000 visits to UK health clubs and leisure centres between April and August 2021, only one person went on to test positive for COVID-19.
