BASIS and CLUK announce new partnership to support the public leisure sector to increase their environmental sustainability

02 Nov 2021

BASIS (The British Association for Sustainable Sport) and Community Leisure UK (CLUK) are delighted to announce their new partnership which aims to implement sustainable development principles and environmental management practices in community sports, physical activity and leisure facilities.

As part of their new collaboration, they will be raising awareness of sustainability principles in sport and leisure, and support providers in implementing these principles, addressing barriers, and sharing best practice management.

Sharing their resources, members of CLUK will be able to access support from BASIS through an Associate Membership and receive discounts on valuable environmental awareness training. Equally, CLUK will be inviting BASIS to their events and provide insights on the workings of the public leisure sector.

Together, they will be creating new resources for the public leisure and sport sector to support operators in becoming more environmentally conscious.

Commenting on the new partnership, Kirsty Cumming, CEO at Community Leisure UK said: “We are excited to be working with BASIS. This partnership forms a logical next step for us as a membership body, having recently produced our Climate Change Action Plan and briefing on how leisure and culture trusts can tackle the climate change emergency. Being able to tap into the knowledge and expertise from BASIS will allow us progress this work and provide proactive support to leisure- and culture trusts up and down the country.”

Russel Seymour, Executive Director at BASIS added: “BASIS exists to integrate sustainability principles into the sports, leisure and physical activity sector.

"Community Leisure UK has already started on this process, and we are excited to join with them to offer support and assistance to CLUK and their members. There is no better time to take action than now and, at a time when world leaders are meeting to discuss the impacts of climate change, we look forward to working with our new partners at CLUK to create a sustainable sport, leisure and physical activity sector.”

Community Leisure UK is the members’ association that specialises in representing charitable leisure and culture trusts across England, Scotland and Wales. Trusts are key anchor institutions in their place, contributing significantly to local strategic, economic and community needs. All members are either registered charities, societies or community interest companies; importantly all reinvest their surpluses into those community services and facilities. More information about Community Leisure UK’s work on climate change can be found on their website.

BASIS is the British Association for Sustainable Sport. It is the sustainability hub for the UK sports, leisure and physical activity sector. It is a not-for-profit committed to delivering a positive impact for sport, leisure and physical activity at all levels and to harnessing the power of sport to make a difference for all. More information about BASIS can be found on its website.
