King’s Trust programme sparks career success for young people at North East Better Leisure Centres

Young people from across Newcastle and Gateshead have successfully secured roles at Better Leisure Centres following their participation in the King’s Trust Get Into Leisure programme, reinforcing Better’s commitment to investing in young people.
A total of 13 young people from the North East completed the three-week placement, taking on roles such as concierge, general assistants, catering assistants and supporting in gyms and the trampoline park. Three participants also achieved their Pool Lifeguard Qualification during the programme.
18-year old Missy Edwards, from Sunderland, who has taken on the part-time role of Recreation Assistant at Dunston Leisure Centre, said “Joining the programme gave me the opportunity to expand my skills and gain valuable insight into the leisure industry, while experiencing a completely new working environment. It was unlike anything I had done before - really enjoyable, with a supportive and welcoming group of people. Securing my role at Dunston Leisure Centre has been a fantastic outcome. I’m proud to be part of the team and to be in a position where I can be dependable, contribute positively, and ensure I meet the needs of the organisation every day.”
Tom Goodacre, who was born and bred in Newcastle, is 18-years and resides in Hamsterley Mill. Following the programme, he was appointed as Recreation Assistant at Dunston leisure centre. Tom added: “This programme was a great opportunity to meet new people, build my confidence and learn and develop practical skills that I can use every day in my role. The staff have been so supportive, constantly checking up and making sure I feel at home which made settling in much easier. I’d encourage anyone who is willing to push themselves and step out of their comfort zone to consider giving the course a go.”
Alison Westworth, GLL’s Newcastle Partnership Manager said: “We are incredibly proud to support initiatives like the King’s Trust Get Into Leisure programme that create meaningful opportunities for young people. Seeing several participants progress into roles within our centres is a fantastic outcome and a testament to their hard work and dedication. We look forward to supporting their continued development within the leisure industry.”
A celebration event was held to mark the completion of the three-week programme, recognising the achievements of participants who have taken steps toward careers in the leisure and hospitality sector.
The King’s Trust programmes are designed to support young people aged 16–30 by providing the skills, confidence, and experience needed to enter the workplace. Through free, hands-on training, workshops, and direct access to employers with live vacancies, participants gain practical experience in roles such as lifeguards, fitness instructors, and leisure assistants, alongside qualifications in areas including health and safety and customer service.
Better Leisure Centres, operated by the charitable social enterprise GLL, are committed to investing in young people through employment opportunities, apprenticeships, training and structured pathways into the sports and leisure industry. The organisation runs apprenticeship programmes, Trainee Manager schemes, and provides sponsored qualifications to help young people get on the career ladder. As an employee-owned business, GLL ensures all staff, including young employees, are paid the Real Living Wage and offers entry-level positions suitable for school leavers or those with no previous experience.
