Enexus Energy Market Commentary 26 May 2026
05 Jun 2026
European and UK energy markets moved lower into the bank holiday weekend, with softer near-term fundamentals and improving supply outlooks outweighing ongoing geopolitical concerns. However, markets remain sensitive to developments in the Middle East, with volatility continuing to be driven by sentiment surrounding US-Iran relations and the potential implications for global energy flows.
Gas prices eased on Friday, with UK NBP and European TTF contracts softening amid warmer weather forecasts, lower heating demand, easing Norwegian production constraints, and improved LNG availability into Europe. The UK NBP Day Ahead contract settled around 116.9 p/therm, while forward Winter 2026 pricing moved lower versus the previous session. Despite the decline, pricing remains elevated relative to longer-term historical norms, reflecting the geopolitical premium still embedded within the market. Power markets followed a similar trend, with UK baseload power prices easing modestly as strong renewable generation helped improve system balance. High temperatures across the UK and Europe continue to support strong solar output, while wind generation remains healthy in the near term, reducing gas-fired generation requirements and placing downward pressure on prompt power pricing. UK Day Ahead baseload power opened at approximately £99/MWh, lower than previous settlements. Geopolitical developments remain a key market driver. Optimism surrounding a possible diplomatic agreement between the US and Iran, including discussions around the re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz, initially improved market sentiment. However, renewed US military activity earlier this week has reintroduced uncertainty. Reports indicate that US strikes targeted missile launch sites and Iranian vessels allegedly attempting to lay naval mines, while Iran has warned of further regional consequences. Brent crude oil strengthened in response, highlighting the market’s continued sensitivity to supply disruption risks across the region. From a supply perspective, fundamentals have generally improved. Norwegian gas flows into Europe have increased following earlier maintenance constraints, UK system supply remains stable, and LNG deliveries into North West Europe continue to support availability, albeit still below seasonal averages. Meanwhile, European gas storage injection continues, although inventories remain a key area of focus as markets assess preparedness heading into Winter 2026. Looking ahead, markets are likely to remain highly reactive to geopolitical headlines, weather developments, LNG flows, and storage progress. While recent sessions have shown some easing in forward pricing, volatility remains elevated, and pricing direction continues to be influenced by a combination of short-term fundamentals and broader macroeconomic and geopolitical factors.
