Job description:
Develops, delivers and evaluates guest, group and student informal science education programs, and manages, trains and evaluates SEA LIFE staff. Coordinates programming and best practices with the site’s Displays Curator, and the Education Specialists at other US SEA LIFE Aquariums and with the larger informal science education community. Ensures that all education programs meet the needs of formal and/or informal teaching institutions. Maintains all aspects of educational programs, including talks, building signage and group workshops. Responsible for all budgets relating to the operation functions and education programs.

Manages the daily operation of SEA LIFE Operations and Grounds department. Supervises, monitors, and evaluates the work performance of the Assistant Managers, providing frequent feedback and coaching when necessary. Works closely with other departments of SEA LIFE and the resort. Ensures that SEA LIFE Aquarium’s overall presentation is to the highest quality standards in the industry. Participates in Duty Manager coverage. Implements and monitors training programs, manages competencies and safety standards. Accountable for area recruitment, scheduling payroll, development, guest satisfaction and mystery shops.

Key Objectives:

1. Responsible for training, development, performance management, team building, and other people management activities. Develops departmental staff plan based on general budget guidelines.

2. Develops, delivers and evaluates the educational programs at the site which support the SEA LIFE brand, and ensures that the programs follow local educational standards and best practices in an informal science education setting. Programs must the needs of the general guests of all ages, guests with special needs, as well as students and teachers.

3. Recruits, manages, trains and evaluates the staff, to ensure that they are delivering the programs in a fun, engaging and impactful fashion.

4. Liaises with educators at other aquariums to maintain consistency and quality of the educational programs.

5. Maintains current knowledge of California state teaching standards and current instructional learning methods to develop and enhance staff competencies in order to meet or exceed expectations.

6. Participates in the planning of new developments and exhibits at the site, to ensure that they are fun and engaging and have appropriate and relevant educational content and information delivery systems.

7. Reviews the regional and site-specific digital and printed marketing and communication materials for accuracy as needed.

8. Participates in local and – where possible – national education-related meetings, so as to build SEA LIFE’s credibility, develop personal education-related networks and stay abreast of current informal science education thinking and methodologies.

9. Participates in and supports the resort’s Green Wave Team and takes a lead role in the site’s local conservation efforts, as well as, the SEA LIFE Trust’s programs.

10. Develops show scripts to ensure strong conservation messages are interwoven throughout the content.

11. Creates/controls operating expenses and labor budget for Operations/Education Department.

12. Develops and implements written standard operating procedures and conducts staff training for all areas of responsibility.

13. Ensures that all MCs overseen maintain exceptional guest service, safety and cleanliness standards, as well as, work closely with SEA LIFE® management team to ensure that all MCs are held to these standards.

14. Evaluates and mitigates any safety risks (for both guests and employees) that may arise during activities and operations and develops controls to manage and reduce these risks.

15. Ensures all staff members are active participants in the PDP scheme and that all reviews take place within the published timetable.

16. Creates, updates and edits all pertaining documents for accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Background and Experience:
Experience developing and delivering fun and engaging education programs in a formal or informal setting preferred. Knowledge of informal learning and understanding of current marine conservation issues. Self-starter, with a passion for the marine environment. Strong problem solving skills and dedicated to providing outstanding guest service. Requires the ability to remain calm under pressure. Strong interpersonal, written and oral communications and organizational skills with collaborative, team building approaches. Excellent customer service skills with the ability to develop and maintain good internal and external relations with a diverse group of individuals, including both children and adults.

BS in science, education or a related field. Non-related degree plus related work experience can be substituted.
Four (4) years professional experience working at an aquarium or theme park.
Two (2) years experience working in supervisory role, preferably supervising a minimum of 20-30 employees.
Two (2) years experience creating and implementing education programs.
Two (2) years experience managing operating budgets to include labor and equipment.

Ability to maintain a clean/organized work environment
Ability to work effectively with limited or no supervision, and maintain a work ethic supporting the Aquarium’s mission and goals
Ability to effectively lead a staff of up to 75, ensuring goals and satisfaction are achieved
Must have full/flexible availability; weekend and holiday hours are required
Must be willing to utilize personal vehicle for business purposes
Must possess a driving record that meets the LLC requirements, including current vehicle insurance
Ability to maintain a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, work well under pressure, juggle multiple priorities, exercise good judgment and meet deadlines with professionalism
Basic computer skills with a general understanding of MS Office.

About the Role

The SEA LIFE Education Manager is a hands on position that ensures and facilitates the delivery of world-class guest care by overseeing the smooth and safe running of all guest-facing areas of the attraction on a daily basis. The manager evaluates educational programs and presentation scripts to support the SEA LIFE brand and ensures that the programs follow local educational standards and best practices in an informal science education setting. Working with the rest of our team, they ensure that operations and sales are maintained, delivered and exceeded.


• Develop high-quality educational materials and ensure up to date training for the education team.
• Assists with the recruiting, training and evaluation of the site Educators to ensure that they are delivering the programs in a fun, engaging and impactful fashion. Provides coaching as necessary.
• Floor based role to ensure the highest possible standards of Guest Service, presentation, technical operation and Safety in all operational areas of the Attraction.
• Work with the marketing and operations staff to develop annual and three-year goals for program reach (number of programs, number of participants), educational impact, KPI impacts, and revenue.
• Participate in the planning of new developments and exhibits at the site, to ensure that they are fun and engaging, and have appropriate and relevant educational content and information delivery systems.
• Participate in and support the site’s Green Team, and take a lead role in the site’s local conservation efforts.
• Develop and maintain excellent relations with local schools, including the home school community, as well as local elementary and preschools.


• Assumes position of Duty Manager in rotation with Operations Team; may also assume position of front line Team Member, Trainer, Team Lead, as needed.
• Ensure that the attraction is presented and maintained to Merlin Entertainments, plc acceptable standards in all areas at all times.
• Monitors standards of service and guest response to overall product, through observations and guest comments.
• Monitors team performance in regards to achieving Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and Mystery Visit targets.
• Recommends short and long term changes through feedback, daily reports and proposals.
• Coaches and motivates staff to provide best possible guest experience, to maximize sales opportunities and to ensure admission and commercial spend targets are achieved.
• Demonstrates strong service and sales approach; leading by example throughout the Attraction to maximize up-sells, product excellence, event delivery, etc.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of 2-3 years of service industry experience with 1-2 years of supervisory experience in a visitor attraction, theme park, museum, hotel or theater environment; or equivalent combination of experience and education.
• Experience developing and delivering fun and engaging education programs in a formal or informal setting preferred; knowledge of informal learning and an understanding of current marine conservation issues.
• Experience of maintaining flexibility and the highest level of service in high-pressure and/or stressful situations.
• Proven ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and multi-task as necessary.
• Extensive knowledge of computer including Microsoft Office - Excel, Outlook and Word.
• Desire to work in fast-paced environments.
• Must be flexible and able to work a variety of shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays and special events.
• High school or GED required. College degree preferred.
