Westminster School
Westminster is an ancient school. Its origins can be traced to the Benedictine monastery at Westminster Abbey, and its continuous existence is certain from the early 14th century. After the dissolution of the monasteries in 1540, Henry VIII personally ensured the School’s survival by statute, and his daughter, Elizabeth I, confirmed royal patronage in 1560 and is celebrated as the School’s Foundress. Old Westminsters include John Dryden, John Locke, A.A. Milne, Henry Purcell and Christopher Wren.

Westminster is rare amongst long-established schools in remaining on its original site in the centre of London. Its proximity to Parliament and Westminster Abbey, and the use of the Abbey for its chapel, together with the stimulating diversity of the South Bank and West End, account in part for its special atmosphere and outlook.

Westminster is a selective day and boarding school for boys aged 13 to 18 and girls aged 16 to 18. Each academic year there are around 750 pupils, of whom approximately one quarter board. The School is structured and run as a boarding school, with an extended day and week and a strong House-based system of pastoral welfare, for boarding and day pupils alike.

About the department

The Sports Centre
Situated close to the School’s playing fields at Vincent Square, the Sports Centre is a shared facility with Westminster Under School, the latter being a boys’ preparatory school of some 250 pupils, the majority of whom progress to Westminster School at 13+. Principally a school facility, it is anticipated that some commercial use of the Sports Centre will be developed in the future and the successful candidate will have a role to play in the delivery of any such events.

The Sports Centre is open for use by pupils from 7.00am until 10.00pm Monday to Friday and, at the Great School only, from 9.00am until 6.00pm on Saturday, unless it is a non-school weekend.
