As part of a large-scale transformation aimed at ‘Creating a better future’ which puts improving the quality of life of all local people at the heart of everything, Shropshire Council took on managerial responsibility for the SpArC leisure centre in Bishop’s Castle in April 2020.

It has been a difficult 12 months but an opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic individual to lead the team of dedicated leisure staff as Duty Manager, building on the achievements of the out-going manager and local community Trust. The successful candidate will not only be responsible for driving income and usage targets and operational excellence but will be tasked with developing relationships with major stakeholders and promoting the health and well-being benefits of physical and social activity.

This post is a key front-line role with managerial responsibility for all operational aspects at the centre, including; staff management, financial management, health & safety, security, safeguarding, customer liaison, programming and delivery. Crucially, the successful candidate will ensure the safety and well-being of customers, maintain a high standard of cleanliness and demonstrate the ability to provide and develop a high quality, customer focussed, cost effective and efficient service.

The Council are seeking a self-motivated person with a mature attitude, experience of working within a leisure environment and who has the potential to grow alongside the centre itself. The post holder should be in possession of a relevant Pool Plant qualification, First Aid at Work certificate or equivalent. Customer services and communication skills are essential to this role, as you need to be able to demonstrate efficiency and courtesy when dealing with visitors to the Centre.

Reporting directly to the Leisure Facilities Team Leader you will cover operational opening times when required which will include daytimes, evenings and weekends. Duties include; programming of activities, preparing the facilities for bookings, compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation, including the review and updating of Risk Assessment’s, ensuring routine cleaning and maintenance is completed, and undertaking all front of house functions such as telephone, dealing with bookings, enquiries and cash handling.
