MOBOs to provide Glasgow £3.6m income boost
A decision to move the MOBO urban music awards ceremony to Glasgow, Scotland, is predicted to generate in excess of £3.6m to the leisure sector according to experts.
This year will be the first time the awards are hosted outside of London since its launch in 1996. It was originally predicted that holding the event at the Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre would generate an extra £825,000 but chief executive of the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB), Scott Taylor, said this sum did not take into account the advertising potential or post-event benefits. Steven Findlay, senior economist at GEN consultants in Glasgow, said: "The decision to award the MOBOs has the potential to be highly lucrative. The 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards injected £8.9m into the Scottish economy. Our initial assessment suggests the MOBO awards will inject around £3.6m of fresh income into hotels, restaurants and bars across Glasgow and music and media companies across Scotland.
"Glasgow has established itself as an international centre of music, using the city's Scotland with style brand, City of Culture status and last year's successful application for Unesco World City of Music status." The hosting of the event was secured through a partnership between national events agency EventScotland, and GCMB with the support of Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government.
