Aberdeen Council supports new arts centre
A proposal to build an £8m centre for the contemporary arts in central Aberdeen may get the green light following council support.
Cllr Jennifer Stewart, Aberdeen City Council, said: “I don’t think you can overestimate the positive cultural and economic impact a centre for contemporary arts could have in Aberdeen and across the region.
“Anyone who has seen the benefits that other cities have found through this kind of project will know that we’re not talking about something elitist, but a real asset for every single community.”
The Peacock Visual Arts centre, in addition to an arts development and education department for the council, will likely be constructed in the city centre’s Union Terrace Gardens.
Architects Brisac Gonzalez designed the environmentally friendly building, which will be built underground and use geo-thermal and solar energy sourced heating.
Lindsay Gordon, director of Peacock Visual Arts, said: “The innovative design of the structure would not ruin but enhance the vista and attract visitors to the area.”
Investment is being sought from the council (£3m), the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Enterprise Grampian.
The development is subject to planning permission. If approved, it is expected to open in 2010. Details: www.peacockvisualarts.com
