Aberdeen arts centre gets council backing
Designs for a proposed £10m Centre for Contemporary Art in Aberdeen have been released, after the project secured the backing of Aberdeen City Council.
Plans for the environmentally friendly building include galleries; workshops; printmaking, digital and photography suites; television studios and a dance studio; multipurpose areas for film screenings, music and education as well as a restaurant, gallery shop and cafe.
Architect Edgar Gonzalez of London-based Brizac Gonzalez Architects was appointed to design the outline of the centre, which will primarily be built underground, and heated using geo-thermal and solar energy, at Union Terrace Gardens.
The initiative will bring Peacock Visual Arts, the City Council's Arts Education, Arts Development and Dance agencies under one roof.
Lindsay Gordon, director of Peacock Visual Arts, said: “We’re delighted that the committee have shown a willingness to approve the plans. The countless schemes for Union Terrace suggested over the years show an enormous will to revive these city centre gardens.
“It is wonderful to receive recognition that this centre will deliver a beautiful, iconic building that puts Aberdeen on the cultural map, while at the same time restoring the gardens as a safe, family-friendly destination for our community.”
The centre – currently at the planning application stage – is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors annually and benefit the local economy by around £5m.
