Afan Lido facing 'extensive demolition'
An independent structural assessment of the Afan Lido leisure centre in Port Talbot, which was severely damaged in a fire in December, has recommended the majority of the facility should be demolished.
More than 100 firefighters were called to battle the blaze at the 45-year-old complex on 16 December 2009, which started around 5pm in the swimming pool area before spreading to other parts of the building. Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council (NPTCBC) chief executive Steve Phillips has now revealed that although the sports hall will not require demolition as a result of the fire, the pool complex, reception, gym and ballroom areas will be pulled down.
In a statement, Phillips said: "The report advises that extensive demolition is necessary and officers will be recommending a way forward to the council once financial and technical appraisals for demolition have been completed. "Air tests carried out on the night of the fire, and subsequently, show normal air quality readings, confirming that asbestos disturbed as a result of the fire is confined inside the building."
A nearby Bowls Hall is set to reopen in the near future and the council has revealed that it is working with Afan Lido Football Club to bring its clubhouse and pitch back into use, following the fire. Meanwhile, NPTCBC has confirmed that it will be investigating options for the future provision of leisure facilities in the area, with a public consultation process set to get underway later this year.
