Airports urge global approach to climate change
The Airports Council International (ACI) is urging governments around the world to adopt a global approach to managing the aviation industry’s impact on climate change.
The ACI has submitted a resolution – backed by its member airports – to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which will advise the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen next month.
The resolution aims to find “realistic and achievable” targets for carbon emissions and to set the wheels in motion for long-term carbon neutrality.
ACI world director Angela Gittens said: “Aviation has made tremendous progress in reducing its carbon footprint. And we have worked diligently to show that our industry, more than many others, is taking a systematic approach to reducing fuel consumption.
“We are working with our airline and air traffic management partners to be more efficient in our processes and management of airside operations. Through our joint industry association, the Air Transport Action Group, we have presented a strong case for promoting a global sectoral approach, which will be carried forward by the ICAO.”
