Attractions Industry gears up for new season
The worldwide attractions industry is gearing up for the 2003 season with over 30,000 delegates attending last week's annual convention of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) in Orlando.
The trade floor featured more than 1,300 companies with exhibitors reporting increasing interest from international groups, especially from the Asia Pacific region and Latin America.
On 20 November, The Honorable Shuzu Wang, deputy mayor of the city of Tianjin, announced the opening up of opportunities for the attractions industry in the People's Republic of China. He presented a concept for a $500m theme park development in Tianjin and invited interest from financiers, developers, operators and suppliers. A feasibility study for the project, drawing on the expertise of Economics Research Associates (ERA), has already been completed.
The following day, IAAPA appointed Clark Robinson as its president on a permanent basis. Robinson had been named as interim president in July, following the resignation of Brett Lovejoy. Robinson has served as a former IAAPA president (1981-1982, prior to the title being changed to chair) and has spent 27 years on the association's board of directors.
This year's show also saw IAAPA's current chair, Alain Baldacci, president of Interplay Parks of Sao Paulo, Brazil, hand over his responsibilities to John Collins, owner of John Collins Leisure and director of Fantasia Park in Portugal. Collins and his son Michael, who works with the UK office of ERA, are profiled in the October/November issue of Attractions Management. Details: www.iaapaorlando.com
