BTA backs call for more runways
Britain will lose 230,000 tourism jobs unless new runways are built in the South East, according to the British Tourism Authority (BTA).
The organisation says that the British economy will lose £9.3bn in inbound tourism revenue if airport capacity is not increased by 2030. Demand will outstrip supply resulting in the 10m overseas visitors who want to travel to Britain being forced to travel to other destinations as flights become scare. This in turn will result in a £5bn loss in revenue to the British economy. The government also estimates that the average cost of airfares will increase by £100.
Head of policy at the BTA, Kurt Janson, says new runways are vital in maintaining Britain's status as the world's fifth largest tourism destination: 'Claims that reducing capacity will encourage more British people to holiday at home and that this will provide a net benefit to the country are flawed. Our modelling shows that British travellers will out-compete overseas visitors for available space on flights if capacity is restricted, resulting in an even larger tourism deficit.'
