The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has predicted that rising beer prices could see the cost of a pint reach the £5 mark by the 2012 Olympics in London.

Figures released by CAMRA reveal that over the last four months in British pubs, the average pint of real ale has increased by 12p and the average pint of lager is up 14p.

The cause of the hike is being blamed on the 10 per cent increase in beer tax unveiled by the government in March's budget. Together with falling beer sales and competition from supermarkets, CAMRA says that pubs will find it increasingly hard to avoid passing on wholesale price increases to the consumer in future.

Mike Benner, chief executive of CAMRA, said: "This year's devastating increase in beer tax has forced publicans to increase prices. High beer taxes threaten to prevent many low and moderate earners enjoying a regular pint at their local pub."

CAMRA also fears that continuing increases in beer tax over the next four years will force pubs out of business and see the price of a pint rise to well over £4 by 2012.
