Berwick leisure centre redevelopment on target
Phase 2 of the £850,000 redevelopment of the Swan Centre for Leisure in Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland has started, with the focus on providing a new soft play area by SPI Play, along with two adjacent party rooms.
Phase 1 saw the conversion of the centre's original 500sq m (5,382sq ft) soft play area into a 65-station gym, featuring cv and resistance kit from Technogym, a new 80sq m (861sq ft) spinning studio, and refurbishment of the coffee area and changing facilities. A complete refurbishment of the reception area and offices, which is to form Phase 3 and was originally planned for the Spring of 2010, is expected to commence early.
Work on the scheme is being carried out by leisure design specialist, Createability and project management is by Alliance Leisure. The centre will be managed by Tees Active, which operates mainly in Teesside and runs nine facilities including Billingham Forum, Splash in Stockton, Thornaby Pavilion, Tees Barrage White Water Course and Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre, plus a sports academy and an outreach service tackling childhood obesity in partnership with the local PCT.
