Birtley Leisure undergoes £1.5m revamp
Birtley Leisure Centre in Gateshead is undergoing a £1.5m redevelopment.
Upgrades to the facilities will include a new entrance and reception, updated changing rooms and new sauna cabins, as well as a new car park.
The Lifestyle Fitness club will feature more than 80 new pieces of equipment and the manufacturer’s computerised tracking system, Vivo.
Gateshead Council’s private sector partner Competition Line (UK) funded the revamp.
Councillor David Napier, cabinet member for culture, said: “This will bring first-class fitness facilities at affordable prices for the people of Birtley and the surrounding area.”
Gordon Hall, managing director at Competition Line, added: “Lifestyle Fitness offers an environment to stimulate both body and mind. Stylish surroundings will house the best in cardio and resistance equipment with instructors on hand to help members achieve fitness goals.”
The first phase – entrance, reception and Lifestyle Fitness Club – is due for completion in December, with the remaining plans to be achieved by March 2008.
