Bradford sports village plans to be reviewed
Plans to replace the aging Richard Dunn Sports Centre in Bradford with a new £76m sporting village are to be reviewed due to a funding shortage.
The current plans, backed by Bradford Metropolitan District Council, include the redevelopment of Odsal stadium into a modern, 18,000-capacity stadium; the replacing of the Richard Dunn centre with a new community sports centre; and the creation of a 120-bedroom hotel.
It is understood that the council has only managed to secure £19.3m of the £76m needed. Grants so far secured include monies from the regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward and England Netball.
The council will now submit a report to the council's executive in which it will leave all funding, design and development options "open to exploration" as part of efforts to get the project off the ground.
It is possible that the project will be downscaled to make it sustainable.
Phil Barker, assistant director of the council's leisure services, said: "The Council and its partners are still ambitious in their aspiration to deliver a high quality sports village for Bradford and will endeavour to achieve this goal.
"The report to the Council's Executive is asking for all design options and funding avenues to be explored in order to deliver the facilities everyone seeks. No options are being crossed off the list at this stage."
