Brisbane EKKA wraps for another year
The Brisbane EKKA is over for another year. Sadly, this year's event reported a 20 per cent drop in attendance and many patrons were not spending once inside the gate.
Exhibitors - including commercial, show bags and carnival - all reported a significant shortfall in forecasted takings for the show; with some operators only recouping their rent three days from the close of the show.
One has to question the RNA's methodology behind raising the gate entry price in a time of economic downturn. This was compounded by a highly effective marketing campaign undertaken by Gold Coast theme parks targeting the south east Queensland family market. The multi-entry, highly discounted 12-month entry pass to three Gold Coast theme parks was great value to many families.
The 2009 Ekka was unfortunately again under threat of influenza, Swine Flu and an announcement by the Reserve Bank of Australia one week out, forecasting a 2 per cent increase in interest rates at the end of this year, provided little confidence in consumer spending.
We soldiered on as we do and it was great to welcome three new rides at this year's show. By all accounts they proved popular and we thank those operators who continue to invest in equipment and deliver world-class amusements at our events.
We sadly also said farewell to the Chairlift after 30 years of operation at the Brisbane show and many visitors voiced their disappointment that it will no longer be part of the EKKA environment. We saw the passing of an era to make way for bigger and better. Let's hope the spirit of this show lives on in its new home.
I look forward to future announcements from the RNA in relation to the planned development of the EKKA precinct. There was little communication during our time on site and plans appear to be only artist's impressions at this point. We will keep you posted once we have further updates.
As we head off to the Adelaide and Melbourne shows, we hope next month's report has a more positive spin.
Safe travel and prosperous trading to all!
