Bristol's Healthplex developer to be announced
Bristol City Council will this week select a partner to build and run a multi-million pound leisure complex at Hengrove Park.
The development, called Hengrove Healthplex, will feature an Olympic-size, 50m swimming pool, and is expected to open to the public in 2010.Last year, the council invited DC Leisure, Parkwood Leisure and Community Solutions for Leisure to submit detailed proposals for the development of the £21m sports and leisure centre. At tomorrow's meeting, councillors will be told that two final tenders have been submitted and that the preferred bidder has been identified as Bristol Active.
The chosen partner will be responsible for the design, build, funding and operation of the leisure centre complex for 25 years under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI).
The centre will form part of larger regeneration scheme, which will also include a new community hospital for South Bristol.
Facilities at the centre will include a 100-station health and fitness club, a four-court sports hall, exercise studios and a Healthy Living Zone with a café and créche.
The centre, which will be funded through the government's PFI scheme, received the initial green light in August 2005, when the DCMS announced that Bristol City Council would receive £29.68m towards the developing of the complex.
Councillor Rosalie Walker, cabinet member for healthy communities and culture, said: "Once completed, the new complex will give the people of South Bristol access to first-class sports and swimming facilities rather than having to make do with the somewhat outdated and inaccessible ones currently available."
