British Gymnastics (BG) has announced it has recruited 3,000 children onto its proficiency scheme as the result of a partnership with leisure and sports operator DC Leisure.

The Leisure Centre initiative was established to increase gymnastics standards and grow the number of facilities registering with the national governing body's regional programmes.

Launched in May, the £30,000 project was rolled-out across 10 "key" managed venues and involved the provision of a £3,000 starter kit comprising eight mats and a balance bench.

BG national leisure scheme manager James Boyes said: "We now have 3,000 children on the scheme and hope to see this grow considerably prior to, and beyond, the Olympics."
