Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre reopens
Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre has reopened after a £7m refurbishment following a devastating fire in 2004.
The centre closed in September 2004 after it was gutted by a blaze which also caused significant water damage from the then recently-renovated swimming pool.
The 33m main swimming pool and pool hall have now been substantially overhauled, with the installation of a semi-permanent boom in the main pool, reducing it to a 25m length for hosting local galas and competitions, with a timing system and display board also added.
The smaller section has been given a movable floor, to accommodate the widest range of users, while the adjacent learner pool and leisure pools have been retiled.
Other improvements include the relocation and extension of the centre's fitness suite – the 100-station gym now overlooks the pool. Separate adult changing areas have been built, as well as a new changing village for general public use.
Eric Armstrong, chief executive of Abbeycroft Leisure, the trust which runs the centre said: "We're delighted with the improvements which have been made. It's been a major undertaking, but we feel we have some fantastic facilities now on offer."
