Celtic Wave scheme seeks 'cruise ambassadors'
Three Welsh port destinations - Anglesey, Milford Haven and Swansea - are looking to recruit new "ambassadors", as part of a wider initiative designed to attract more cruise ship passengers.
The €1.2m (£1m) Celtic Wave project, which was unveiled last year, has seen the three Welsh locations team up with the Irish Sea ports of Waterford, Dublin and Cork in a bid to boost their respective economies. Local residents in the three participating Welsh areas are now being given an opportunity to train as Celtic Wave Tourist Guides, with a training course to be delivered by Llandrillo College over a 24-week period starting in October.
Funding for the course will be provided through the Interreg 4A Programme with European Regional Development Fund, with successful applicants set to gain an accredited 'green badge' qualification. Celtic Wave project manager Sue Thomas said: "Those who complete the training programme will have a foundation in guiding, allowing them to become self-employed guides as well as ambassadors for their respective areas and the Welsh cruise ship industry."
