Colchester United’s £14m stadium plans approved
Plans for Colchester United’s new £14m stadium have been given the green light by the local borough council.
Two hundred and fifty members of the public attended a meeting on 13 October, where the council considered the business case for the 10,000-seat stadium and agreed to make the finance available to borrow the money needed for its construction.
Robert Davidson, leader of the council, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the way the vote went. It was a unanimous decision and a momentous day for Colchester.
“Colchester Borough Council, together with Colchester United Community Sports Trust, Colchester United Football Club and Colchester 2020, will now work to make the stadium a reality.”
Work on the new stadium, which will be located at Cuckoo Farm, could begin in as little as eight weeks with a proposed completion date of December 2007.
Colchester United’s current home is the 6,200-seat Layer Road, where the club has been since 1937.
