Conservation volunteer scheme launched
The government has unveiled plans to boost the number of conservation volunteers in England.
Environment secretary Hillary Benn launched the £750,000 campaign, which aims to get more people involved in helping the natural environment – for example by creating and maintaining ponds, putting up bird and bat boxes and planting.
Defra will be rolling out the scheme in partnership with the Department of Health’s Change4Life campaign. It will also donate more than £1m to a new fund – the Fund for Local Biodiversity Recording – to improve local recording of wildlife across England, with the aim of giving people better access to information collected in different parts of the country.
Benn said: “More people are getting involved in environmental volunteering – there was a 31 per cent increase between 2000 and 2007 – but overall the number is still relatively low.
“Conserving biodiversity is not something the government can do alone, and I want more people to have the opportunity to protect and take pride in their local wildlife and landscape.”
