DCMS launches young musician venture
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is launching a new initiative to help musicians across the country.
Culture secretary James Purnell has appointed former chair of the Live Music Forum, Feargal Sharkey, to establish a network of rehearsal studios for up-and-coming musicians.
Purnell said: “I want young musicians to have access to a professional studio. This is about inspiring young people to take up music, giving them an outlet for their creativity and getting them off the streets.”
Sharkey will cooperate with key figures in the music industry, local and regional government, equipment suppliers and the Music Manifesto Board to establish suitable premises and funding for new music studios.
Feargal Sharkey said: “Without new musicians and performers there is no £6bn music industry.
“It’s also about ensuring young people have all the opportunity and support that we can possibly provide to get them into the creative industries. It’s about giving them the confidence to play in front of an audience to discover themselves.”
In January 2006 the local council donated space free of charge and the Music Industries Association provided equipment for a pilot rehearsal studio in Wrexham, which successfully attracted more than 700 people, mostly under 18s.
Ed Balls, secretary of state for children, schools and families, added: “All young people should be able to develop their talents and achieve their ambitions. If their talent is for music then we want to give them an affordable and well-equipped place where they can practice and fulfil their potential.”
