DCMS starts scheme to boost culture
Culture Secretary, Chris Smith, has announced a £40m project to give school children in 16 deprived areas in England opportunities to experience the arts and creativity. The opportunities created could include gaining hands-on experience with actors and technicians, attending master classes by artists, making and curating an exhibition at local museums and working with producers at recording studios. Speaking at the launch of the areas at the Downside Boys Club in Bermondsey, Chris Smith said: Every child should have creativity in his or her life, and the chance to develop their creative skills and knowledge through access to the rich diversity of the imaginative work of our arts organisations, creative individuals and industries. There will be one pilot scheme in each area, each involving around 15-25 schools.
