According to Marina Saunders, director of sales at ZigZag, dance mats can provide an ideal way to drive secondary spend within both public and private sector health clubs.

Leisure centres can charge an additional fee for dance mat classes within their programmes while private health clubs can use the dance matsystem to help cover the cost of the initial investment through revenue-building ideas such as children's parties or hen parties.

With one of the dance mats biggest bonuses being their portability, dance mats can also be taken into the community to attract new members while external venues - such as supermarkets - can be charged for outdoor events.

As Saunders explained: "I ran a Christmas party for 25 representatives from Newham Borough Council last December, as a break out sessions during their annual meeting. We ran a competition for the 'top score', 'fastest improver' and 'best groover'.

The concept was completely foreign to them, but it worked as a great team-building experience. By the end of the session, they'd become so competitive that they were pusing each other out of the way to take a turn on the mats. The group didn't stop laughing for an hour and a half."
