A new trampolining centre of excellence for children and adults with disabilities is set to open in Cardiff towards the end of the month.

The registered charity Rebounders, which was founded in 2002, will run the new centre full-time after securing a five-year lease of a 3,000sq ft (278.7sq m) unit from Emvic Developments.

Rebounders made the decision to move to its own centre in 2005 due to rising demand and limited availability at local leisure centres. The charity currently has over 100 clients from around the whole South Wales area, and it is hoped that the number will increase further still when the centre opens.

Sufficient funding from the project was secured by October 2007, with contributions from the Foundation for Sports and the Arts and the Peter Harrison Foundation, as well as a number of other organisations including Cardiff University and the Lord's Taverners. The lease for the unit at Quay Point in Cardiff was signed in July.

Rebounders' Heather Sargent said: "The classes are open to children and adults who would struggle to cope in a mainstream class due to physical, learning, communication or behavioural difficulties.

"Children are taught at their own pace in small groups with others of similar age and ability, and this helps them relax and respond much better than if they were in a group where they were continually struggling to keep up with more able and coordinated peers."

An official opening of the new centre is planned for early October, and the charity hopes to publicise its work to encourage support and sponsorship to ensure the centre's success.
