Dorset castle set for major renovation
A major scheme to repair and restore Sandsfoot Castle in Weymouth, Dorset, has been handed a boost after the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) approved a development grant towards a survey of the site.
The £23,100 first-round pass will allow the Friends of Rodwell Trail and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council (WPBC) to establish how much work is needed to stabilise the castle and make it safe for public access. A full survey of the castle, including a laser scan of the building and the cliff face, is set to be completed by May 2010 before being submitted along with a conservation and management plan as part of a second-round application for HLF funding.
Project manager David Carter said: "Our ultimate aim is to see Sandsfoot Castle saved from premature destruction. To our knowledge, there isn't another example of this style of Tudor fortification in the country, so it's imperative that efforts are made to stabilise the structure that remains." WPBC's brief holder for culture, tourism and community facilities, Brendan Webster, added: "Sandsfoot Castle is Weymouth's only Ancient Scheduled Monument and to enable greater public access to it would be a real legacy."
If successful in its HLF funding bid, the project team hopes that restoration work will get underway in 2011.
