Enjoy England Awards for Excellence
Sir Cameron Mackintosh, the theatre producer, won the Outstanding Contribution to Tourism prize at this year’s Enjoy England Awards for Excellence.
Sir Cameron was one of 14 other ‘gold’ award winners at the ceremony, held at Madame Tussauds, London on 20 April.
Hugh Taylor, chair of the England Marketing Advisory Board, said: “Theatreland took a bad knock after 7/7, but thanks to the resilience of London theatres, visitors quickly returned.”
He added that in fact, a record 12 million people saw plays, musicals, comedy, opera and dance in London last year, making a “considerable contribution to English tourism”.
Sir Cameron said: “Theatre in London has a gigantic role to play in attracting visitors. The capital is on an upward spiral – great shows, great shopping and great attractions.”
The Enjoy England Awards are now in their 17th year, and are made up of 13 categories, from visitor attractions and hotels, to self-catering accommodation and caravan parks.
Other winners at the awards included the London Eye (Best Tourism Experience), the National Maritime Museum, London, (Large Visitor Attraction of the Year), Castle Howard Farm Shop and Courtyard Café, York (Taste of England award) and Matfen Hall Hotel Golf Spa, near Newcastle (Large Hotel of the Year).
