Eston pool gets a facelift
Eston swimming pool, which is run by Tees Valley Leisure, has opened its doors following a major £200,000 facelift.
The work, which has turned a drama into a delight following flooding in July, forms part of a three year £2.4mprogramme to refurbish Redcar and Cleveland leisure sites.
Ian Donley, Deputy Chief Executive of Tees Valley Leisure which runs Eston Sorts Academy, which houses the pool said:
"We've had a difficult four months following the floods and decided to bring the refurbishment programme forward to save closing the pool twice but this has all been worthwhile and I'm sure people will agree the pool is a complete knock out!
"Facilities include new changing rooms with newly installed cubicles and lockers, new poolside surrounds, a new filtration system and easy access steps for bathers. The pool will offer an even more enjoyable experience for the thousands of people who use the facilities each year" added Ian.
The Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism Councillor Sheelagh Clarke explained: "We are committed to improving a range of activities and facilities for the people of Eston and the Borough and this is another big step forward.
"Refurbishments are also planned for the Borough's other leisure sites for 2010 and 2011as part of the Councils' long term commitment to better leisure facilities and better access to all.
Regulars Marion Wyke and Gwen Danaher, who are both members of Eston's 'Second Youth' activities programme for the over fifties, were thrilled to be the first bathers to try out the new pool facilities.
Marion said: "We really missed our swimming when the pool closed for refurbishment as swimming makes us feel marvellous - but we are thrilled to be back in our local pool and delighted at the new facilities.
"Swimming keeps us really fit - it's a great way to relax but we also enjoy the social benefits of using the pool facilities here at Eston and meeting other people and we missed that when it was closed.
Gwen added "As local residents we really value Eston pool - it plays a key role in terms of health and fitness of the local community and will always be a community hub."
