European Commission approves funding for Burren project
The European Commission has approved funding towards a EUR2.2m (US$2.7m, £1.7m) project to further integrate tourism and the natural heritage of the Burren, Ireland.
Clare County Council is leading the scheme, which is one of 202 to receive support through the LIFE+ initiative - the European Union's environment funding programme.
The Burren project is designed to consolidate previous work to protect the region's heritage, as well as ensuring tourism development complements the conservation of biodiversity.
A number of Irish authorities and agencies will combine to match the EUR1.1m (US$1.3m, £862,000) grant, with the project to be managed over the next five years.
Project manager Carol Gleeson said: "The funding will be used to develop and implement scientifically sound and sustainable visitor management and monitoring practices at key natural sites and cultural monuments in the Burren."
