Ex-teacher devises new concept
A former teacher is setting out to carve a new niche in the health and fitness industry with children's clubs. Andy Baker who has also run his own childcare company and worked at Next Generation Clubs as group childcare manager, says there are adult only and ladies only clubs, but it's the first time this has been done for children. Still in the development stages, Children First clubs are aimed at the AB demographic group and will cater for babies from six months old to 16-year-olds. Spanning 25,000sq ft, the facilities will include a nursery/ creche, a children's gym, a leisure pool/swimming pool, a soccer stadium, homework and IT zones and a youth club. As well as sports creative activities like performing arts will be on offer. Baker says membership capacity will be 3,000 and he is confident it will work because it will be run by teachers rather than playworkers. It will be membership only in three grades - £22, £36 and £49 a month. The most expensive band of membership will include after school clubs and holiday schemes. Talks are currently underway with private operators regarding the possibility of partnerships and Baker also plans to work with schools to provide swimming lessons in off-peak times. Baker hopes to open the first club in 2003 and is currently looking at sites within the M25 area and is close to securing one in Basingstoke. He says it's a revolutionary concept: it's developing a new sector in both the leisure and childcare industries. Details: [email protected]
