FA orders Cardiff pitch replacement ahead of cup final
Cardiff's Millennium Stadium pitch is to be replaced for the third time just in time for the forthcoming FA Cup final, after FA officials deemed the pitch inadequate. Expert analysis on the state of the pitch came from Rob Cullagh, who prepared Wembley's hallowed turf for the last 13 years. Cullagh concluded that the pitch did not meet high standards demanded by one of football's most prestigious events, and FA officials gave the green light to replace the turf. The Welsh authorities will have to meet the £100,000 cost of transferring the reserve pitch in the Vale of York to the Millennium Stadium, only two weeks after the last pitch replacement. The current turf will be dug up today and the new pitch replaced on Saturday. The FA Cup final between Arsenal and Liverpool takes place 12 May 2001.
