The Fitness Industry Association (FIA) last night unveiled the winners in its annual Quorn™ Commit to Get Fit® campaign.

The try before you buy membership scheme runs across the country throughout the summer to encourage increased participation in health and fitness while raising money for charity. This year’s beneficiary was Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Awards included the club with the highest number of enrolments – Espirit Health Club, Scarborough – and the club with the highest number of conversions – Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, North Somerset.

Andover Leisure was named as the campaign’s highest fundraiser (leisure centre), while the individual clubs raising the most money were Foundation Fitness Club in Sandhurst, Surrey (under 1,500 members) and Dragons Health Club in Orpington, Kent (over 1,500 members).

Castle Place Leisure Centre in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, took the award for most innovative challenge for organising a gaolbreak – staff and members had to break out of gaol and race back to the centre.

The FIA award for excellence went to OTB Media – DC Leisure Management.

Nigel Wallace, executive director of the FIA, said: “Commit to Get Fit 2003 has been an extremely successful campaign which not only encouraged thousands of people throughout the country to get up and get active but also raised a large amount of money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

“Hundreds of club operators worked hard to ensure Commit to Get Fit was a success and in many instances the level of member enrolments and conversions exceeded all expectations – as did the wacky extremes clubs went to in order to raise money for charity.

“A number of health clubs and centres deserve to be recognised for the outstanding contributions they made to the campaign and the Commit to Get Fit Awards provide the FIA with the opportunity to acknowledge the clubs that truly excelled.”
