FIA to tackle teenage inactivity in next stage of On the Move to 2010
The Fitness Industry Association (FIA) is to launch the second initiative in its On the Move to 2010 campaign next year, in a move designed to tackle teenage inactivity.
Following on from its Adopt a School scheme, the FIA’s new initiative will specifically target girls aged 14 and 15 years old.
The association claims a high proportion of girls in this age group fail to meet recommended levels of physical activity, with 64 per cent of girls aged 15 classed as inactive and 70 per cent of girls dropping out of exercise between 16 and 18 years old.
“We want to encourage them to take action now, before it’s too late, as sadly only 2 per cent of inactive teenagers will become physically active adults,” said Nigel Wallace, executive director of the FIA.
“The next initiative will aim to empower these young people to take control of their own health and fitness and educate them about the diverse range of physical activities available.”
Initially a series of focus groups will be created to research the campaign before a pilot scheme is launched in June. Details: www.fia.org.uk
