Feasibility study commissioned on water sports centre
A team of consultants has been appointed to investigate the feasibility of building a new water sports centre and rowing course at a lake in Ashford, Kent.
Situated to the north east of the town centre, the lake overlooks the Kent Downs designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and has been formed as a result of gravel extraction.
Despite a long-running discussion over suitable uses of the lake, development options have not been forthcoming, encouraging Kent County Council to commission sport and leisure consultants PMP to evaluate the site and report on the best potential solutions.
Options under consideration include either a 1,000m or 500m rowing course, as well as provision for other non-powered water sports, such as dinghy sailing, canoeing, sub aqua and triathlon. The development is also likely to include dryside facilities, either in the form of a new centre or the conversion of existing buildings on the site.
PMP project manager Chris Marriott said: "We have already made good progress on the identification and initial examination of the possible options and are confident that there is certainly a place for a water sports facility at Conningbrook.
“We will now work in partnership with Kent County Council and the other key stakeholders to deliver some exciting and sustainable ideas."
