Fitness blitz underway to combat Philadelphia's fatties
Health clubs in 'America's fattest city', Philadelphia, have been urged to slash their prices as the city goes into fitness overdrive. Mayor John Street, who himself lost more than six stone, has appointed a 'fitness tsar' and is encouraging the city to shed 76 tons in 76 days, as well as its fat image, following coming top in an obesity table in Men's Fitness magazine. A ban has been imposed on the city's signature dish, Philadelphia Cheese Steak, and volunteers are hitting the streets with scales, diet tips and fitness plans. People more than seven stones overweight are being offered a two-week diet programme financed by the city. About 30,000 residents have signed up for the programme, each of which will have to lose 5lbs if the 76-ton target is met. The city's basketball team, the Philadelphia 76ers are backing fitness tsar Gwen Foster and Mayor Street, who told the city: We are too fat. Street hopes that other US cities will follow the example, in an attempt to tackle the country's obesity epidemic.
