Freedom Leisure has launched the K2 Crawley Friday Night Project to offer young people aged 11-19 the opportunity to take part in a range of activities for just £2 on Friday evenings.

The sessions were created following consultation with young people in the area and launched on 30 October.

Young people can participate in basketball, football, climbing, trampolining, streetdance, breakdance and boxacise, with West Sussex Youth Workers assisting sports coaches and instructors with supervision and additional support from Police Community support Officers.

The local Strategic Youth Action Group (SYAG) and the Sussex Police Authority (SPA) jointly provided £12,000 in funding for the scheme.

Dave Downey, community sports development officer for Freedom Leisure, said: "The K2 Crawley Friday Night Project will give young people some constructive activities to take part in every Friday night.

"All activities will be led by instructors and will take place indoors, which is particularly good during the winter months.

"There should be a very positive local community feel to this project as so many local agencies and sports clubs will be involved in its delivery.

"We hope that this project will help reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour whilst also helping to increase levels of physical activity and visits to K2 Crawley by young people."

Councillor Lenny Walker, cabinet member for leisure and cultural services at Crawley Borough Council, said: "The Friday Night Project at K2 Crawley is exactly what young people have been telling the council what they want. We have responded by providing, with help from others, this weekly event aimed exclusively at 11-19 year olds. The activities on offer sound fantastic - I just wish I was under 19 again!"
