From shots to squats: Former pub transformed into first MyGym site
A former pub in Retford, Nottinghamshire, has swapped pints for pull-ups as part of its transformation into the very first site for new health club chain MyGym.
The 4,000sq ft (372sq m) health and fitness facility in Retford’s Bridgegate Centre is the first of five MyGyms planned to be opened in the Midlands over the next five years. Murtagh Mulholland – a fitness professional with more than 20 years’ experience – is leading the venture, backed by a silent partner and a bank loan.
“Retford saw many empty premises during the recession, and the Bridgegate area was no exception,” said Mulholland, who sought planning permission as the pub had lain empty for two years.
“Over the past year, there have been a number of new enterprises opening in the area, and with the health sector continuing to expand, I could see that the ‘MyGym’ concept of a high-end facility, at an affordable price, would complement the existing fitness offering perfectly.”
The new gym is equipped with Matrix Fitness products, including cardio equipment from the brand’s 7xe range, and Matrix Aura Series’ strength equipment, in addition to a functional rig. Members also have access to Jack Malin’s fitness app ‘membr’, enabling them to track their workout, book classes, as well as create and update a personalised exercise plan in conjunction with MyGym’s specialist team.
Membership for MyGym ranges from £19 to £24 per month.
