Funding for Sikh community sport
Sport England has awarded a London Sikh group £150,000 to improve sporting opportunities in the community. The grant represents Sport England's largest donation from its Active Communities Development Fund.
The Sikh Community Care Project based in Leyton, London will use the money to increase sporting participation and activities for its members over the next five years through a community sports strategy and development programme. The programme will use a mix of coaching, training, work placements and mentoring. Two new posts, a project co-ordinator and an outreach worker, will also be created to help deliver the programme.
'This project is important for youngsters, especially Asian children who have a low up-take in sports. It will also help regenerate the local area and assist in keeping young people off the streets and prevent crime,' said Jasbir Singh, Project Co-ordinator for Sikh Community Care Project.
