GBC to consider Heritage Quarter plans
Gravesham Borough Council (GBC) has announced that plans for the creation of a new £120m Heritage Quarter in Gravesend, Kent, will be considered by its regulatory board on 20 September.
London-based property group Edinburgh House is working in partnership with the local authority on the development, which is to be carried out in two stages and initially went before planners in April before being deferred. The proposed Heritage Quarter will boast more than 20,000sq ft (1,858sq m) of restaurants and leisure facilities; a new hotel; a town square; a children's play area and improved connections to the river walkway.
New and enhanced St Andrews Gardens; church community facilities; offices; retail units and housing also form part of the development, with the first phase to be completed in mid-2012. GBC leader Mike Snelling said: "When the previous administration of the council authorised the signing of a legally binding development agreement with Edinburgh House, it believed the project was the best for the regeneration of the town centre.
"But there is no financial pressure on members of the regulatory board because the development agreement is subject to the planning process. If members next month were to refuse the application, the developer has the right to appeal that decision."
