GLL apprenticeship training scheme boosts local jobs in London
Thanks to a Government funded training scheme, 14 recently qualified Recreation Assistants have gone on to paid work and a career in leisure in GLL run leisure centres within the M25 area.
Picking up their awards at a passing out ceremony held at the Eltham Centre in Greenwich on 13 September 2010, the apprentices have all successfully completed the Recreation Assistant Apprenticeship - run by charitable social enterprise GLL in partnership with Greenwich Community College and the London Leisure College.
Now qualified to save lives and provide excellent customer service at GLL Leisure Centres, the apprentices each undertook a five-month intensive training scheme to achieve the following qualifications: Level 2 Modern Apprenticeship, including NVQ Operational Services Level 2, Key Skills in Communication and Numeracy Level 1, NPLQ certificate, and First Aid at Work certificate.
GLL is recruiting now for entry to the next scheme which kicks off on 4 October.
Says Daniel Howling, 28, from Greenwich who joined the scheme in 2008 and now works for GLL as a Duty manager, "Working within the leisure industry has given me the opportunity to learn and develop alongside motivated, enthusiastic and experienced people. It's an industry where you can help others and pass on your knowledge, while also getting qualified and developing a long-term career.
"With the London Olympics on the horizon, the leisure industry is the industry to work in. Undoubtedly the best decision I ever made was to train as a pool lifeguard and Recreation Assistant."
Mark Sesnan, Managing Director of GLL added, "We're delighted to be able to offer some positive news to those looking for employment within the leisure sector during these challenging times. Many of the inner city areas in which we operate already have high levels of unemployment and we hope that our expansion will offer local jobs to local people and help to support the communities in which we are based."
