Germans encourage self regulation for tanning
Health clubs with tanning facilities and tanning salons in Germany are being urged to get certification under the new Certified Solarium seal of quality.
A round table – which included representatives from the German government, the tanning industry, cancer specialists and dermatologists – developed criteria for the certification last summer and two certification centres have been appointed.
The new process gives operators the opportunity to have their businesses tested for quality and safety by an independent body on a voluntary basis, said Daniela Hornung of Heraeus Noblelight, one of two accredited certification centres in Germany.
“If this system is not successful over the next two years the general feeling in the industry, is that this will eventually become law,” she said.
The certification aims to protect consumers by confirming the solarium’s sense of responsibility and high standard of quality of equipment, hygiene and customer information and advice.
Heraeus was recently the first tanning studio in Germany to be awarded with the new seal of quality.
