Graves Tennis and Leisure centre to be revamped
An ambitious £18m upgrade scheme has been unveiled for the Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre in Sheffield.
Sheffield Council, which owns and operates the facility, has agreed outline terms with private company Win Tennis to renovate the premises and make them fit for training international players.
Win Tennis currently runs the tennis academy of the National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey in Berkshire, and is hoping to transform the site into the premier tennis academy in the north of England.
The proposals include a phased redevelopment scheme for the venue, with the first phase replacing the ageing swimming pool with a brand new 25m pool and modern changing facilities, viewing gallery and café.
Further phases would include an enlarged fitness facility, an increased number of indoor courts and the creation of a number of outdoor clay courts.
The deal would include Win Tennis signing a 125-year lease on the facility, which now has to be approved by the city council.
It is estimated that the overall investment by Win Tennis could total £14m.
Councillor Tim Rippon, cabinet member for economic development for the city council, said: “This is a great opportunity to make great progress for this important leisure centre in the south of the city.
“I believe that the deal ill not only provide a regional centre of excellence that will add to the city’s sporting portfolio, but also valuable leisure facilities for the community in this part of Sheffield.”
