Greenwich Time and Space Project to open first phase
The first of four Time galleries is due to open on 15 February as part of the £15m planned redevelopment of Greenwich Royal Observatory’s Time and Space Project.
The galleries will explore four themes: Time and Longitude, Time and Greenwich, Time for the Navy and Time in Society.
The galleries have been funded by the Millennium Commission, Wolfson Foundation, Accurist Watches and the National Physical Laboratory.
The second stage of the project, scheduled to be fully functioning in spring 2007, will focus on the planetarium, space galleries exploring modern astronomy and time, an horology workshop with public sessions and a Lloyds Register Education Centre.
The 120-seat Peter Harrison Planetarium – named after the leader of core Internet technology in the UK, who donated £3m to the project – will be housed in a contemporary new building designed by London architects Allies and Morrison.
The planetarium will give visitors a view of the night sky and take them on a journey to space using digital effects. The building will be at 0 degrees longitude and will be tilted at 51.5 degrees – the latitude of London. It will point at the Pole Star.
“It will provide a remarkable educational tool for generations of future visitors,” said Harrison.
Entrance charges are yet to be announced, but most of the galleries will be free. Details: www.nmm.ac.uk
