HLF offers £1m to historic paper mill
Frogmore Paper Mill in Apsley, near Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, has been earmarked for a £1m grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to fund a restoration programme.
The renovation will restore two of the historic site’s key buildings – currently deemed unsafe – and provide facilities for an interactive mill tour, a café and a multi-purpose exhibition space.
Peter Ingram, chair of Apsley Paper Trail, the charitable trust which owns and operates the mill, said: “This is fantastic news for everyone involved with the project over the last 14 years. Our aim has always been to provide public access to this amazing mill.”
The mill, seen by many as the birthplace of mechanised printing, is still making paper today using a steam-driven machine from 1890, which is the successor to the original machine that was developed and trialled at the site in 1803.
A final decision is yet to be made on the grant, but should the revamp go ahead, the mill is expected to receive 50,000 visitors a year. Details: www.thepapertrail.org.uk
