'Help A London Park' scheme launched
A new scheme has been launched by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, that will give Londoners the chance to vote on which ten parks should receive grants of up to £400,000 each.
At least one park in every London borough is set to benefit from the £6m 'Help A London Park' project to improve the capital's green spaces, and it is being funded through efficiency savings made from the previous Mayor's publicity budget. In addition to the ten grants of up to £400,000, one park will be selected by Johnson to receive a £2m grant with the advice of a panel of experts. The parks will be improved in a number of ways, including better footpaths, new playgrounds and improved cycle routes.
Nearly 100 green spaces were nominated for the project by the London Boroughs, and 47 of those have now been shortlisted. Londoners have until Friday 30 January to vote on which parks they think should receive the improvement grants. Johnson said: "This investment will make the capital's open spaces cleaner, safer, greener, and more enjoyable places for Londoners to use. Parks provide a free place for families to enjoy time out, and often simple improvements such as better play areas and improved lighting can make a real difference."
