Historic parks gain £15m grant
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has given £15m to five historic UK parks for improvements.
The oldest park – Wollaton Hall and Park– will be given the largest sum, £4.5m, for repairs to the hall, which is one of the most important Elizabethan houses in the county. The park attracts 1.2 million people per year in visits from Nottinghamshire alone.
The others – South Marine Park in South Shields; Castle Gardens in Lisburn, Northern Ireland; Towneley Park in Burnley and Lydiard Park in Swindon – gained between £2.2m and £3m each.
Recent HLF research has shown that 86 per cent of children prefer to go the park rather than watch television when the weather is good, while a third of people living in towns and cities visit a park at least once a week.
Baroness Andrews, minister at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, said: “We have a unique tradition of municipal parks and gardens in this country, which provide so much value to the places where we live.
“People are beginning to notice real changes and the HLF has made a major contribution to making this happen. But we need to keep up the progress to ensure every community benefits from safe and attractive green spaces.”
Over the past 10 years, the HLF has committed more than £400m to 260 urban parks. Details: www.hlf.org.uk
